Mobridge Ice Fishing Tournament Decision 01-05-2012

The Mobridge Chamber Tourism Committee met in length today to discuss about what to do with the tournament. It was decided that the ‘event’ would go on as planned, BUT that there would not be any endorsed fishing or weigh-ins. With the lack of ice and ever changing conditions of what ice there is, the concern was for the safety of the entrants. The Friday night registration and prize give away will be at the regular published times. All handouts (buckets, food, snacks, & etc.) will be given out Friday night. Saturday will be an open day for entrants to do as they wish. At 6 o’clock on Saturday we will start drawing places for prize money, and other “place” prizes. Will give away the prize money and the rest of the “large” prizes on Saturday night starting at 7:30 p.m.

Please be assured that this was not an easy decision for us to come up with, but it is in the best interest of the safety of the anglers that participate. If you have additional questions please contact the Mobridge Chamber at 605-845-2387.

Ice Tournament Update

The tourism committee had a meeting today, and we do have some alternative plans that we are thinking about. Nothing is set in stone as things can change in 24 days. Be assured that once something is decided on, we will keep everyone posted. Our next meeting is January 5th at that time we should have a better feel on ice conditions and plans.

As for current ice conditions. From Blue Blanket South, there is open water. There is also some open water under the bridges. There have been people fishing in the Grand River and Oak Creek. It sounds like the ice is certainly better North of town.

Fishing in the Mobridge are has been great. The water temp is close to 70 degrees and water clarity is great. Anglers are fishing from 6′ to 22′ feet of water. Crankbaits, bottom bouncers and crawlers, and plain hooks tipped with leaches are the best way to get walleyes. Reports of a lot of walleyes being caught over 20″ are being caught. Areas from Moose flats, Blue Blanket, and Walth Bay are producing fish.

At Mobridge fishing is excellent and at this time the Moose Flats area is very good. Anglers are using jigs and minnows with a few starting to use crankbaits. Depth is anywhere from 10-25 foot. Report from the MoRest Motel is that they had fisherman last week that had been coming for 20 years and said they was the best fishing they’ve seen! Time to get out on the water. There is a bit of debris in the water, but not a lot at this time

The ice is rapidly melting away on Lake Oahe. The bays are open for the most part, and the main lake is starting to open in the middle. Won’t be long and the boats will be on the water.

Lake Oahe – Mobridge – Ice Report

Members of the Tourism Committee were out yesterday to check the snow/ice conditions. There definitely is snow on Lake Oahe. The GF&P has done a great job in clearing out access points at Indian Creek, but Lake Oahe has quite of few drifts on it. The committee was able to drive across with their pickups, but did have to shovel a couple of times.

The best mode of transportation will again be snowmobiles, but the committee thinks that ATVs with chains may do the trick to. For those of you that fished the tourney last year, there isn’t as much snow as in 2010, and there isn’t the slush problem.

As for the fishing, it is still pretty good. Reports seem to be consistent at the 28-32 feet of water on different jigs. Castmasters and Jiggn Rapalas are still the most popular.

Anglers have been hitting the hard ice in Mobridge, and have had a lot of success. Shacks are spread out from North of Oak Creek to Sitting Bull, and it sounds like most anglers are having great fishing. Ice conditions are good, ranging from 9-16 inches of ice thickness with people using ATV’s, snowmobiles, and in someplaces pickups to get around. There is some snow on the the ice with drifts of about 10 inches in places. With the impending storm that is suppose to be here on Thursday, conditions may change. Be assured that the Mobridge Chamber’s Tourism Committee will be keeping a good eye on the ice conditions, and keeping our ice anglers posted on the best mode of transportation.

Lake Oahe Ice Report-From Mobridge North 6-10 inches, good clear ice, there are some bigger ice shacks already out there, and saw some ATVs on the ice. Indian Creek has 4 inches, and it gets a less as you go south. Not much snow on the ice, and fish are being caught!!
