Man/animal rock crowds at 64th annual Stampede

More than 450 cowboys and cowgirls battled for nearly $45,000 in prize money at the 64th annual Sitting Bull Stampede on July 2, 3 and 4.
Chase Floyd of Ludlow won the biggest check of the Stampede, winning $1,786 for taking first place in steer wrestling. The South Dakota bulldogger put his steer on its side in a super-quick 4.6 seconds. Travis Handcock of Clemons, Iowa, took second. His time of 5.3 seconds was worth $1,553. Jason Lawrence of Washburn, N.D., and formerly of Promise, tied for third with Jason Ohm of Ree Heights. The two cowboys put the steers down in 5.4 seconds with each earning $1,204. There were 70 steer wrestlers in the competition.
Scott Montague of Rapid City rode Lady Gaga to a huge 85 points on July 4 to win the bareback riding. Montague earned $1,336 for his effort. Ty Breuer of Mandan, N.D., scored 80 points on Dinner Bell, earning a second place $1,012. Cleve Schmidt of Piedmont scored 79 points for third. His ride on the back of Royal River was good for $728. Bareback riding had 22 competitors.
Clay Cowan was another cowboy to use the Independence Day rodeo to claim a title. The Highmore cowboy turned in a time of 10 seconds flat to win the tie-down roping and lay claim to $1,639. Seth Childers of Cameron, Texas, earned $1,425 for a second place time of 10.1 seconds. Luke Klein of Hartford finished third with a time of 10.6 seconds and picked up $1,211. Tie-down roping had 62 calf ropers.
Brody Bolton of Odessa, Texas, rode Ruby to the tune of 81 points to win the saddle bronc riding. His Fourth of July ride was worth $1,467. Kaden Deal of Dupree led for two rodeos before settling for second place and earning $1,111. Deal scored big on the back of Justin’s Pepper. Ty Manke of Rapid City rode Cadillac Jack for 77 points to take third and pick up $800. Britt Luger of Ft. Yates, N.D., and Matt Elliott of Valentine, Neb., tied for fourth with 76 points. Each cowboy earned $422. Proving that drawing the right horse (and staying on) plays a big role in saddle bronc riding. Luger rode Justin’s Pepper and Elliott rode Cadillac Jack. Saddle bronc riding had 28 competitors.
Three cowboys tied for the bull riding championship. With all three riders scoring 78 points, Tell Koan of Spearfish rode Red River, Chris Bob Bernt of Spalding, Neb., rode Real Deal and Cole Hermanson of Mandan, N.D., rode Black Powder. The winners took home $1,097 each. Bull riding had 27 riders climb on a bull.
Julie James of Pinedale, Wyo., was faster than 73 other racers and won the barrel racing. The 2009 Stampede champion ran the barrels course in 16.79 seconds and collected $1,506. Brittany Fleck of Mandan, N.D., went 16.95 seconds and picked up $1,295. A pair of Harding County sisters took third and fourth. Jessica Painter, now of Rapid City, used a time of 16.96 seconds to take third place and earn $1,076. Joey Painter of Buffalo ran the course in 17 seconds flat for a fourth place check worth $932.
South Dakota cowboys dominated the team roping. Jake Nelson of Creighton and Jeff Nelson of Philip won the event with a time of 5.8 seconds. Each cowboy picked up $1,397 for the effort. Shaw Loiseau of Colman and Casey Wilson of Flandreau tied with Brett Price of Faith and Paul Griemsman of Piedmont tied for second and third. Their shared time of 6.3 seconds was worth $1,036 for each cowboy.
